The tax bands
| Winnings per ticket | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to €100 | 0% (tax-free) |
| €100.01 – €200 | 2.5% |
| €200.01 – €500 | 5% |
| €500.01 – €2,500 | 10% |
| Above €2,500 | 20% |
The rate does not apply to your whole prize
This is where most people get it wrong. Each band's rate applies only to the amount exceeding that band's lower threshold.
If you win €600, you do not pay 10% of €600. You pay 10% of the €100 above €500, which is €10.
Your stake is deducted first
Before the bands are applied, the amount you paid for all your entries in the draw that produced the win is deducted.
If you played a €10 ticket and won €150, the taxable base is €140. Since €140 falls in the €100.01–€200 band, the tax is 2.5% of the €40 above €100, which is €1.
What "per ticket" means
Tax is worked out separately for each ticket and each draw.
If you hold three tickets each winning €90 in the same draw, every one is below the €100 tax-free threshold. You pay no tax at all, even though the total is €270.
Worked examples
These ignore the cost of entry for simplicity.
| Prize | Calculation | Tax | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| €80 | Tax-free | €0 | €80 |
| €150 | 2.5% × €50 | €1.25 | €148.75 |
| €300 | 5% × €100 | €5 | €295 |
| €600 | 10% × €100 | €10 | €590 |
| €2,000 | 10% × €1,500 | €150 | €1,850 |
| €5,000 | 20% × €2,500 | €500 | €4,500 |
When it is withheld
Playing online, tax is withheld the moment winnings are credited to your electronic account. The amount is truncated to two decimals.
At an agency, tax is withheld at payment. What you collect is already net.
Winnings certificates
You can request a winnings certificate stating your total spend, gross winnings, tax withheld and net winnings.
It is granted only to players with a Greek tax number. For agency play it covers gross winnings of €1,000 or more per ticket collected through a bank. For online play it covers total net winnings for the previous fiscal year.
Three common mistakes
"I won €600, so I lose 10%." No. You lose 10% of the €100 above €500 only.
"I have to declare it to the tax office." No. The tax is withheld at source.
"Tax is calculated on my total winnings." No. It is calculated per ticket and per draw.
Cyprus has different rules
Taxation of winnings in Cyprus differs from Greece. See the FAQ for details.
